SCENIC VIEWS - ARMS OF THE STATES BORDER BY MELLOR, VENERABLES & CO. c.1840

A very rare historical blue transferware wash bowl and pitcher in the "SCENIC VIEWS - ARMS OF THE STATES BORDER" pattern.  The set was made by Mellor, Venerables & Company about 1840. The pitcher has the same scene on both sides and the bowl has a different scene. The border has various U.S. State seals such as Pennsylvania, Virginia, New York,  Massachusetts, et al (original lookup 13 plus Alabama, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi and Ohio. The wash bowl rim has seven State Arms with five different states. The central band around the middle has eight different seals. The slightly scalloped bowl is 12 inches in diameter and 4 1/4 inches high. It is in excellent condition and is free of chips, cracks or nicks. The bottom of the basin has a few glaze bubbles and one pot stone. The outside foot has a glazed over in the making shallow flake. The ewer has 8 seals on both the inside and outside rim. The handle has three seals and the foot has six seals. It is impressed with a stamp but it is illegible. It is about 12 3/8 inches high to top of the handle and 11 3/8 inches to the top of the lip. There are a few firing cracks around the handle. The wash bowl and pitcher are unlisted in both Laidecker's Anglo-American China and David & Linda Arman's "Historical Staffordshire - An Illustrated Check List." This is a very nice and rare Historical Staffordshire wash set.
