Made in Central Massachusetts in the 1830s, the tablet-top is fastened to the post by two hand-cut screws, a typical form used by Jonathan Whitney of Templeton, Massachusetts. The back of the chair displays a wonderful rake and the turnings are bold and crisp which is also typical of his work. The chair is of a chrome yellow base paint with blue highlights on the ball spindles and bamboo legs. The tablet has ochre, green and black colors. The tablet is 20 inches wide and 3 1/8 inches high, The chair is 34 1/2 inches high with a seat height of 17 3/4 inches. The seat with its outlined shield is 16 1/2 inches wide and 16 inches deep. In original as found condition with no repairs or inpainting, this great chair exhibits wear typical of 175 years of use.
