Very pleasing in form, this is an Amish meeting bench from Big Valley, Pennsylvania, located near the Bedford & New Stanton area in the western part of the state. The bench, dating from the mid 19th Century, is mortised and has square nail construction. It is 86 inches long, 16 1/4 inches deep and 18 1/4 inches high. It has a cock beading on the front and back which is incised into the board and stands on nicely cut out legs. On the front there is also a small apron. The boards are large and are about 1 1/4 inches thick. Old white over gray paint. This bench is exceptionally steady and does not wiggle when you sit on it. Because of its height it would be ideal for the taller family at a farm table or the perfect coffee table in front of a long sofa.
